Climate in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe offers phenomenal experiences all year round. But depending on what you want to experience, it is good to pay attention to the time of the visit.

Zimbabwe is an inland state in southern Africa and has a semi-arid climate. Although it is dry in Zimbabwe most of the year, there are also periods of rain, and the seasons can therefore be divided into a dry and a rainy season. The rainfall of the rainy season contributes to a large biodiversity in the country, whose landscapes are incredibly varied. The weather varies very little in the different areas of the country and the periods as a whole occur as described below. However, there may be local variations, e.g. in Hwange National Park and Mana Pools.

When is the rainy season in Zimbabwe ?

The rainy season in Zimbabwe runs between November and March. The period is also known as Zimbabwe’s summer and is characterized by a combination of very high temperatures – some days above 40 degrees – and the risk of thunderstorms and rain, which, however, mainly fall during the afternoon. It rains most in January and February, when the rain can be for longer periods. The rainy season is perhaps the most photogenic season with a lush, green landscape and dramatic color play in the sky. The animals are easier to hide during this period, but in return there are many animal cubs that attract predators such as lions, leopards and hyenas, which are in search of easy prey. If you love birds, travel to Zimbabwe during the rainy season. During these months you have good opportunities to experience both local and migratory birds, which also reproduce during this period.

+ The scenery is greener, and it’s low season resulting in lower rates

+ The best time to see newborn animals

+ Bird watching is at its best, many birds are in their breeding plumage and migratory birds are present

+ Rains are mostly short afternoon showers and seldom have a negative impact on your safari

– Wildlife viewing is more difficult since there is more vegetation and animals no longer rely on waterholes

– The humidity combined with the higher temperatures in the low-lying parks can make it feel uncomfortably hot

– From October to December, the flow of the Zambezi river is at its lowest and Victoria Falls isn’t at its best

Birdwatching is best during the rainy season.

When is the dry season in Zimbabwe ?

The dry season lasts between April and October. The period is also called Zimbabwe’s winter and is generally characterized by cloudless, blue skies and almost no rain. At the beginning of the period, the day temperatures are still very warm, but gradually fall to a more comfortable level and then rise when the rainy season knocks again. It can get chilly in the evening and in the morning, so it is a good idea to pack warm clothes if you are going out for morning or night safaris. The colors of the landscape begin to fade, the trees lose their leaves and the animals find it harder to hide in the bush, which was previously so lush. In addition, water is becoming a scarce product and the many animals are happy to gather at water holes and rivers during the dry season, which makes them easier to see.

+ Vegetation is thin and animals concentrate around water; wildlife viewing is easier

+ Virtually no rain, clear blue skies and lots of sunshine; there are fewer mosquitoe

+ Although it is high season, the parks won’t be crowded, except for Victoria Falls

+ Victoria Falls is most spectacular from May through September when the water is mid-to-low, and the spray doesn’t block the view to the falls

– October is very hot in low-lying areas, with temperatures above 32°C/90°F

– It gets cold at night and in the mornings; warm clothing is needed

– From March to May massive clouds of spray will block the view of Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is most spectacular from May to September.
